Collect from the surface

Two things decide which category you need
Where is the water — on the surface, or in the soil? Watch the yard after rain. Visible puddles mean surface tools. Ground that stays soft underneath while the surface dries means subsurface tools.
Is there somewhere lower to send it? Every system that moves water needs a discharge point below the drain. If you have one, you can move water. If you do not, you can only store, absorb, or pump it — and that changes the answer entirely.

Before you install anything
Two fixes sit outside this list and resolve a surprising share of drainage problems for a fraction of the cost:

Correct the grade. Ground that has settled into a slight fall toward the house, or a depression that collects water, is often cheaper to fix with soil than to manage with drainage.
